# Exporter Country Facts API

## Overview

The Exporter Country Facts API returns the public facts an export credit team checks before quoting payment terms into a country, in one call and with the date of every figure. For each country it combines the OECD country risk classification, UK Export Finance cover policy, macro and governance indicators from the World Development Indicators and Worldwide Governance Indicators, World Bank Enterprise Survey figures on how local firms finance and pay, and MIGA political-risk guarantee exposure. Five endpoints cover a single-country profile, side-by-side comparison, rankings by any indicator, the indicator catalogue and a service health check.

It is built for exporters and their credit controllers setting payment terms, trade-finance and receivables-finance platforms screening destination countries, and ERP or quoting tools that warn when a quote goes to a flagged country. Responses are structured JSON with a headline block, grouped indicators and rule-based flags such as `oecd_grade_high` or `inflation_above_10pct`, each stating its threshold. The API returns facts, not advice: it does not rate countries or buyers or say whether to trade.

## Features

* **5 Endpoints:** Country profile, comparison, rankings, indicator catalogue and health check.
* **OECD Country Risk Grade:** Grade 0 to 7 and whether it changed at the latest classification. High-income OECD and euro-area countries are not classified and show as `-`.
* **UK Export Finance Cover:** Short-term and medium/long-term cover, market risk appetite and the conditions UKEF attaches.
* **Macro and Governance Data:** Inflation, current account, external debt, reserves in months of imports, private credit, rule of law, regulatory quality, control of corruption and political stability.
* **Enterprise Survey Figures:** Supplier and customer credit use, bank credit, loan rejections, collateral and bribery incidence, with survey years shown and figures older than five years marked old.
* **Transparent Flags:** Rule-based flags with their thresholds stated. There is no composite score.
* **Compare and Rank:** Up to 10 countries side by side, or every country ordered by any indicator.
* **Rate Limit:** 2 requests per second on the free plan, up to 50 per second on MEGA.

## Use Cases

* **Credit Control:** Check a destination country before agreeing open-account or deferred payment terms.
* **Trade Finance Platforms:** Screen destination countries automatically when a receivable or letter of credit is submitted.
* **ERP and Quoting Tools:** Warn sales teams when a quote goes to a country with a high OECD grade or restricted UKEF cover.
* **Market Entry Research:** Rank candidate markets by governance, inflation or reserves before committing to a new region.

## API Documentation

### Base URL

All API requests for the Exporter Country Facts API should be made to the following base URL:

```
https://prod.api.market/api/v1/193market/exporter-country-facts
```

### Authentication

Authentication is handled via an API key. You must include your key in the `x-api-market-key` header of every request:

```
x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_KEY
## Status Codes
| Code | Status | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `200` | OK | The request succeeded and the country facts are returned. |
| `401` | Unauthorized | The `x-api-market-key` header is missing or contains an invalid key. |
| `422` | Unprocessable Entity | A parameter is invalid: an unrecognised country code (use ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 or alpha-3), or an unknown `indicator` on `/v1/rankings` (see `/v1/indicators` for valid ids). |
| `429` | Too Many Requests | You have used all the API units in your plan, or exceeded its per-second limit (2 requests per second on BASIC). |
| `500` | Internal Server Error | An unexpected server-side error occurred. Retry after a brief delay. |
| `503` | Service Unavailable | The service is temporarily unavailable. Retry with exponential backoff. |
## Rate Limits
Every plan has a monthly API unit allowance and a per-second rate limit. The free BASIC plan runs as a 7-day trial with 30 API units at 2 requests per second. Paid plans: PRO $49/month with 1,000 units at 10 requests per second, ULTRA $149/month with 5,000 units at 20 requests per second, and MEGA $399/month with 25,000 units at 50 requests per second. When you exhaust your plan's units or exceed its per-second limit, the API returns `429 Too Many Requests`. Throttle your client to stay under the per-second limit, back off before retrying, and honour the `Retry-After` header when it is present.
## FAQ
*   **Why does Germany show an OECD grade of "-"?**
    The OECD does not classify high-income OECD and euro-area countries. The API shows these as `-` rather than inventing a grade.
*   **Which country codes can I use?**
    ISO 3166 alpha-2 codes such as `DE` or alpha-3 codes such as `DEU`. The response always returns both.
*   **How do I find valid values for the rankings `indicator` parameter?**
    Call `/v1/indicators` and use any returned `id`, for example `wdi_current_account_pct_gdp`. An unknown id returns `422`.
*   **How current is the data?**
    Every figure carries its period. Enterprise Survey figures are often from 2014 to 2019 and are marked old when more than five years out of date. MIGA exposure uses the latest published quarter.
*   **What is not included?**
    FATF high-risk and increased-monitoring lists, private credit insurers' country ratings, sanctions lists and buyer-level data.
*   **Is this a country risk rating?**
    No. The API returns public facts and rule-based flags with stated thresholds. It does not score countries or advise whether to trade.
