# Reddit Posts and Comments API

## Overview

The Reddit Posts and Comments API returns public Reddit data as JSON: the posts of a subreddit, a post with its comment tree, a user's posts, or a Reddit search. One endpoint takes a mode and its target and returns each post's title, text as Markdown, HTML or plain text, score, upvote ratio, comment count, author, flair, links, images and date.

It is built for brand and community monitoring, researchers collecting Reddit discussions, AI pipelines that need Reddit content and apps replacing subreddit RSS feeds. With `onlyNew` and a `watchName`, each call returns only the posts that earlier calls of the same watch have not returned. No Reddit account, app or API key is needed.

## Features

* **1 endpoint**: subreddit, post, user and search modes.
* **Post data**: title, text, score, upvote ratio, comments, author, flair, links and images.
* **Comment trees**: a post with its comments, including expanded threads.
* **Only-new watches**: `onlyNew` with `watchName` returns only unseen posts.
* **Output formats**: Markdown, HTML or plain text.
* **Rate limit**: up to 10 requests per second.

## Use Cases

* **Community monitoring**: watch a subreddit for new posts.
* **Brand mentions**: search Reddit for your brand.
* **Research**: collect discussions with their comments.
* **RSS replacement**: poll a subreddit and get only new posts.

## API Documentation

### Base URL

All requests go through the API.market gateway at this base URL:

```
https://prod.api.market/api/v1/benthepythondev/reddit-scraper
```

### Authentication

Every request needs your API.market key in the `x-api-market-key` header:

```
x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_KEY
```

Replace `YOUR_API_KEY` with your actual API key.

### Endpoints

#### 1. Reddit Scraper

Replaces subreddit RSS feeds (Reddit turns them off Nov 13, 2026): call it on a schedule with onlyNew to get only the new posts. Reddit posts and comments by subreddit, post link, user or search: title, text, score, comment count, author, flair and links. Up to 10 results per request, as JSON.

**Method:** `POST`

**Endpoint:** `/`

**Parameters:**

| Name | In | Description | Type | Required | Default | Max Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| mode | body | What to scrape from Reddit | string | No | subreddit | - |
| subreddit | body | Subreddit to scrape (e.g., 'python' or 'r/python'). A subreddit link or an old RSS feed link such as https://www.reddit.com/r/python/.rss also works. Required for subreddit mode. | string | No | AskReddit | - |
| postUrl | body | Full URL of Reddit post to scrape (for post mode) | string | No | - | - |
| username | body | Reddit username to scrape posts from (for user mode) | string | No | - | - |
| searchQuery | body | Search query to find posts (for search mode) | string | No | - | - |
| searchSubreddit | body | Limit search to specific subreddit (optional for search mode) | string | No | - | - |
| sort | body | How to sort posts | string | No | hot | - |
| timeFilter | body | Time range for top/controversial sort | string | No | all | - |
| maxPosts | body | Maximum number of posts to scrape (0 = unlimited) A request returns 10 rows at most. | integer | No | 10 | 10 |
| strictMatch | body | Search mode only. Reddit's search also returns posts that only relate to your words (in New order, 15 of the 30 newest results for "home assistant" lacked one of the words on October 26, 2026). With this on, a post is kept only when its title or text contains every word of the query, so a keyword or brand watch returns real mentions. | boolean | No | false | - |
| deepScrape | body | Reddit ends a subreddit list after about 950 posts and a search after about 240. When on, the API also reads the other orders and time ranges of the same subreddit or search and adds the posts it has not saved yet, until Maximum Posts: about 2,400 posts of a large subreddit and about 1,100 of a broad search in our tests. Subreddit and search mode. | boolean | No | false | - |
| onlyNew | body | Monitoring for subreddit, search and user mode: each request returns only the posts your earlier requests for the same target and watchName have not returned, oldest first. Call it on a schedule to replace a subreddit's RSS feed. The first request returns the newest posts and marks where the watch begins. A watch is identified by its target and watchName: use a long random watchName that only you know. | boolean | No | false | - |
| watchName | body | Optional. Runs with the same target and the same name share one memory of delivered posts. Give two schedules on the same subreddit or search different names to keep them apart. | string | No | - | - |
| maxComments | body | Maximum comments to scrape per post (applies to both post mode and subreddit mode with includeComments, 0 = unlimited) | integer | No | 50 | 10000 |
| includeComments | body | Scrape comments for each post in subreddit mode (slower but more data) | boolean | No | false | - |
| expandMoreComments | body | When ON (default), resolves Reddit's 'load more comments' stubs via /api/morechildren and follows 'continue this thread' links so the scraped count matches num_comments. Turn OFF for faster runs that only return the first ~50 comments per post. | boolean | No | true | - |
| sinceDate | body | Subreddit mode only: keep posts on or after this UTC date (YYYY-MM-DD). Invalid dates and other modes with this field are rejected. | string | No | - | - |
| outputFormat | body | Format returned in content on posts, comments and nested replies. Original text/Markdown/HTML fields remain available. Plain text is extracted from source HTML; original text is retained when HTML is absent. | string | No | markdown | - |
| includeImages | body | Include extracted image URLs and thumbnails. False returns an empty images array and a null thumbnail; post URLs and links within the original text remain unchanged. | boolean | No | true | - |
| delaySeconds | body | Delay between Reddit API requests to respect rate limits | number | No | 1 | 10 |

**Example Request:**

```bash
curl -X POST 'https://prod.api.market/api/v1/benthepythondev/reddit-scraper/' \
  -H 'x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_KEY' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"subreddit": "AskReddit", "maxPosts": 5}'
```

**Example Response (201 Created, trimmed):**

Long lists are cut to their first items and long text is shortened.

## Status Codes

| Code | Status | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 201 | Created | The request ran and the body holds the results. |
| 400 | Bad Request | The body is not valid JSON or `mode` is not allowed. |
| 401 | Unauthorized | The `x-api-market-key` header is missing, invalid or expired. |
| 403 | Forbidden | Your subscription does not include this endpoint. |
| 404 | Not Found | The path, or the item you asked for, does not exist. |
| 429 | Too Many Requests | You sent more than 10 requests per second, or you used all 50 calls of the Free trial plan. |
| 500 | Internal Server Error | Something failed on the provider side. Retry after a short delay. |
| 503 | Service Unavailable | The service or its data source is temporarily unavailable. Retry with backoff. |

## Rate Limits

You can send up to 10 requests per second. Free includes 50 calls (a 7-day trial), Basic includes 1,500 calls a month for $9.99, Pro includes 12,000 calls a month for $29.99 and Mega includes 50,000 calls a month for $99.99. Requests above the limit return `429 Too Many Requests`; throttle your requests, back off before retrying, and honour the `Retry-After` header when it is present.

## FAQ

* **How many rows does a call return?**
    Up to 10 posts and comments together; call again with `onlyNew` to continue.

* **Can I read private subreddits?**
    No. Private, banned and quarantined subreddits return an empty array.

* **Why do lists stop after about 950 posts?**
    Reddit ends listings there; `deepScrape` also reads other orders and time ranges.
