# Wikipedia Page Summary API

## Overview

The Wikipedia Page Summary API returns the summary of any Wikipedia article as JSON and lets you search article titles. A summary gives the page title, a short description, the lead extract in plain text and HTML, the thumbnail and original image, and the page URL. Search returns matching titles with their URLs, so you can find the exact title to summarise.

It is built for chatbots, knowledge panels, AI agents, education apps and content tools that need a clean, short definition or introduction of a topic. Every Wikipedia language edition is supported through the `lang` parameter.

## Features

* **3 endpoints**: health check, page summary and title search.
* **Lead extract**: the article's opening section in plain text and HTML.
* **Images**: thumbnail and original image URLs when the page has one.
* **Any language**: set `lang` to a Wikipedia language code such as `en`, `fr` or `de`.
* **Title search**: up to 20 matching titles with `limit` (default 5).
* **Data source**: Wikipedia's public REST and search APIs.
* **Rate limit**: up to 10 requests per second on every plan.

## Use Cases

* **Chatbots and AI agents**: ground answers with a short, sourced introduction to a topic.
* **Knowledge panels**: show a summary and image next to search results.
* **Education apps**: give learners a quick definition with a link to read more.
* **Content enrichment**: add descriptions and images to entities in your database.

## API Documentation

### Base URL

All requests go through the API.market proxy at this base URL:

```
https://prod.api.market/api/v1/betelgues/wikipedia-page-summary
```

### Authentication

Every request must include your API.market key in the `x-api-market-key` header:

```
x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_KEY
```

Replace `YOUR_API_KEY` with your actual API key.

### Endpoints

## Status Codes

| Code | Status | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 200 | OK | The request succeeded and the response body holds the result. |
| 400 | Bad Request | A required parameter is missing or a value is invalid. Check the parameter table for the endpoint. |
| 401 | Unauthorized | The `x-api-market-key` header is missing or the key is not valid. |
| 403 | Forbidden | Your key is valid but your subscription does not allow this request, for example an endpoint outside your plan. |
| 404 | Not Found | The path does not exist, or the resource you asked for was not found. |
| 429 | Too Many Requests | You sent more than 10 requests per second. Slow down and retry, honouring the `Retry-After` header. |
| 500 | Internal Server Error | Something went wrong while processing the request. Retry after a short wait. |
| 503 | Service Unavailable | The service or its upstream data source is temporarily unavailable. Retry with backoff. |

## Rate Limits

Every plan allows up to 10 requests per second. Subscription plans also have a monthly call quota shown on the pricing page. Sending more than 10 requests per second returns `429 Too Many Requests`. Throttle your client to stay under 10 requests per second, back off and retry when you get a 429, and honour the `Retry-After` header when it is present.

## FAQ

* **How do I get the right title for /summary?**

 Call /search first and pass the `title` of the result you want to /summary.

* **Can I use other languages?**

 Yes. Set `lang` to the language code of the Wikipedia edition. For example, `q=Paris&lang=fr` returns results from fr.wikipedia.org such as `https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris`.

* **Why is description empty in search results?**

 Search returns titles and URLs. Call /summary for the description and extract.

* **What is the /health endpoint for?**

 It returns the service name and version so you can confirm the API is reachable before sending real requests. It does not fetch any data and is not needed for normal calls.
