# Website Contact Extractor API

## Overview

The Website Contact Extractor API takes a company domain and returns the contact points that company publishes on its own website: generic business emails such as info@ and sales@, phone numbers normalised to E.164 with their country and line type, official social profiles, the company name and legal name, the postal address and the EU VAT ID from the legal notice (Impressum). It has 1 endpoint. It reads the homepage and then the pages that usually hold contact details (contact, legal notice and about pages, and optionally pages found in the sitemap), never more than the `max_pages` you set, up to 10. Every item comes with the page it was found on, how it was found (for example a `mailto` link, a `tel` link, schema.org structured data, free text or a Cloudflare-protected email) and a confidence score from 0 to 1.

It is built for sales and RevOps teams enriching CRM records and inbound leads, procurement and finance teams checking a supplier's published address and VAT ID, and developers building B2B prospect lists from their own domain lists. The response has a `status` (`ok`, `no_contacts_found`, or a reason the homepage could not be read), a `company` object, `emails`, `phones` and `social_profiles` lists sorted best first, a `pages_checked` list showing each page read and whether it loaded, an `omitted` block that counts named-person emails and personal profiles that were found but not returned, a `warnings` list and a `metadata` block with fetch time, elapsed milliseconds and a cache flag.

## Features

* **1 endpoint**: `GET /v1/contacts` returns every published contact type for a domain in one call.
* **Simple inputs**: A bare domain such as `example.com` or a full website URL such as `https://www.example.com`, plus an optional page limit and a sitemap switch.
* **Business emails**: Role mailboxes typed as `generic` or `unknown`, each with a `domain_match` flag showing whether it is on the website's own domain.
* **Normalised phones**: Each number in international format and E.164, with its ISO 3166 country, line type (for example `fixed_line` or `mobile`) and a `phone` or `fax` label.
* **Social profiles**: Official company profiles on networks including LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, GitHub, Xing, Bluesky and Mastodon.
* **Company details**: Name, legal name, postal address and EU VAT ID, with the page they came from.
* **Traceable results**: Every item has a `source_url`, a `source_type` and a `confidence` score, and `pages_found_on` counts how many checked pages it appears on.
* **Data source and method**: The company's own public web pages, read live. robots.txt is respected, and named-person emails and personal profiles are never returned.
* **Rate limit**: 1 request per second on FREE, 3 on PRO, 5 on ULTRA and 10 on MEGA.

## Use Cases

* **CRM and lead enrichment**: Add the official email, phone and social channels to company records from just the website domain.
* **Supplier and partner onboarding**: Check the legal name, published address and EU VAT ID on a supplier's legal notice.
* **B2B prospect lists**: Turn a list of company domains into generic contact points without collecting personal data.
* **Data quality checks**: Compare the phone numbers and addresses in your database against what the company currently publishes.
* **Social profile discovery**: Find a company's official LinkedIn, X or YouTube pages for marketing research.

## API Documentation

### Base URL

All requests go through the API.market gateway at this base URL:

```
https://prod.api.market/api/v1/compasslab-1/contact-extractor
```

### Authentication

Every request needs your API.market key in the `x-api-market-key` header:

```
x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_KEY
```

Replace `YOUR_API_KEY` with your actual API key.

### Endpoints

#### 1. Get company contacts

Reads the company's homepage plus its contact, legal notice and about pages (up to `max_pages`) and returns the business emails, phone numbers, social profiles, company name, legal name, postal address and EU VAT ID it publishes. Each item carries the page it was found on and a confidence score.

| Name | In | Description | Type | Required | Default | Max Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| `domain` | query | Domain or website URL, for example `example.com` or `https://www.example.com`. Minimum 3 characters. | string | Yes | - | 253 characters |
| `max_pages` | query | Number of pages to read, homepage included. Minimum 1. | integer | No | `5` | 10 |
| `include_sitemap` | query | Also look for contact pages in the site's `sitemap.xml`. | boolean | No | `false` | - |

```
In this example no phone number or postal address was found on the three pages read, so `phones` is empty and `address` is `null`, while the VAT ID and legal name came from the legal notice page.
## Status Codes
| Code | Status | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 200 | OK | The request was processed. Check `status`: `ok` means at least one contact was found, `no_contacts_found` means the site was read but publishes nothing the API can return, and other values (for example `blocked_by_robots` or `timeout`) explain why the homepage could not be read. |
| 400 | Bad Request | The input could not be used, for example a value in `domain` that is not a usable domain or URL. The JSON body has a stable `error` code, a readable `detail` and a `request_id`. |
| 401 | Unauthorized | The `x-api-market-key` value is invalid or expired. |
| 403 | Forbidden | Your subscription does not include this endpoint. |
| 404 | Not Found | The path does not match an endpoint of this API, for example a typo in `/v1/contacts`. A company website that returns 404 is reported as `status: "not_found"` in the result instead. |
| 422 | Unprocessable Entity | A parameter is missing or invalid, such as a missing `domain` or `max_pages` above 10. The response says which one. |
| 429 | Too Many Requests | You went over your plan's requests-per-second limit, or you have used all the calls in your plan. |
| 500 | Internal Server Error | Something failed while processing the request. Retry after a short delay. |
## Rate Limits
Each plan has its own per-second limit: FREE allows 1 request per second, PRO 3, ULTRA 5 and MEGA 10. The plans include 50, 2,000, 10,000 and 50,000 calls respectively, and every call counts as one call however many pages it reads. Requests above the per-second limit, or after the plan's calls are used up, return `429 Too Many Requests`. Back off before retrying and honour any `Retry-After` header. Because several pages are read per call, responses take longer than a single page fetch: the example call above reported `elapsed_ms` of 1912. The seller states that a typical answer takes 2 to 6 seconds, and that in its own test of 40 company domains, 30 returned at least one email or phone, with a median time of 2.7 seconds.
## FAQ
**Does it return personal email addresses?**
No. Addresses that look like a named person, such as jane.doe@, are dropped and only counted in `omitted.named_emails`. Personal social profiles such as linkedin.com/in/ pages are handled the same way and counted in `omitted.personal_profiles`.
**Why is there no result for a well-known company?**
Some sites publish only a contact form, and some block automated requests. `status` and `pages_checked` show exactly which pages were read and whether each one loaded. A site that publishes nothing returnable gives `no_contacts_found`, or social profiles only.
**What is the difference between `generic` and `unknown` emails?**
`generic` is a recognised role mailbox such as info@ or sales@. `unknown` is an address that is not a recognised role but does not look like a named person either, for example `notices@stripe.com` in the example above.
**How are phone numbers formatted?**
Each phone has `value` in international format (for example `+33 1 23 45 67 89`) and `e164` in E.164 format (for example `+33123456789`), plus the ISO 3166 `country`, the `line_type` and a `label` of `phone` or `fax`.
**How many pages does it read?**
The homepage plus up to `max_pages` minus 1 contact, legal notice and about pages. The default is 5 pages in total and the maximum is 10. Set `include_sitemap=true` to also look for contact pages listed in the site's sitemap.
**How is the confidence score set?**
It runs from 0 to 1 and is higher for machine-readable sources such as `mailto` links, `tel` links and schema.org structured data, and lower for addresses and numbers found in free text.
**Does it respect robots.txt?**
Yes. If robots.txt disallows the homepage, the response returns `status: "blocked_by_robots"` and no contacts.
