# 🎨 Text-to-Image Generator API (Playground v2.5)

## Overview
Playground v2.5 is an open-source text-to-image model from Playground; this is its 1024px aesthetic version. Its developer describes it as the state-of-the-art open-source model in aesthetic quality.

Send a `prompt` to generate images, add an `image` for image-to-image, or add an `image` and a `mask` to inpaint part of an image. Each request returns a list of 1 to 4 image URLs, set by `num_outputs`.

## Features
- **Image size**: `width` and `height` from 256 to 1536 pixels (default 1024 x 1024).
- **Up to 4 images**: `num_outputs` from 1 (default) to 4.
- **Image-to-image**: send an `image`; `prompt_strength` (0 to 1, default 0.8) sets how much it changes, where 1.0 discards all of the input image's information.
- **Inpainting**: send an `image` and a `mask`. Black areas of the mask are preserved and white areas are inpainted.
- **Schedulers**: eight options; `DPMSolver++` (default) or `DPM++2MKarras` is recommended for most cases.
- **Watermark and safety checker**: a watermark is applied by default (`apply_watermark`) and the safety checker is on by default (`disable_safety_checker` is `false`).
- **Negative prompt and seed**: `negative_prompt` defaults to `ugly, deformed, noisy, blurry, distorted`; set `seed` to reproduce a result.

## Use Cases
1. **Illustrations and concept art**: stylised scenes and characters from a text description.
2. **Marketing visuals**: images for ads, blog posts and social media at sizes up to 1536 pixels per side.
3. **Image variations**: restyle an existing image with image-to-image.
4. **Local edits**: replace part of an image with inpainting while keeping the rest.

## Visual Examples
### Example Input
Prompt: "Astronaut in a jungle, cold color palette, muted colors, detailed, 8k"

The request used the default size (1024 x 1024), one output, the `DPMSolver++` scheduler and 25 steps.

```json
{
  "width": 1024,
  "height": 1024,
  "prompt": "Astronaut in a jungle, cold color palette, muted colors, detailed, 8k",
  "scheduler": "DPMSolver++",
  "num_outputs": 1,
  "guidance_scale": 3,
  "apply_watermark": true,
  "negative_prompt": "ugly, deformed, noisy, blurry, distorted",
  "prompt_strength": 0.8,
  "num_inference_steps": 25
}
```

### Example Output

| `apply_watermark` | boolean | No | `true` | | Applies a watermark so generated images can be identified later. Set to false if you have other ways to mark or deploy images safely. |
| `disable_safety_checker` | boolean | No | `false` |  | Disable the safety checker for generated images |

## Pricing
- **Pay As You Go (PAYG) pricing**: you only pay for what you use.
- **Price**: $0.079 per API unit.
- **1 API unit = 1 request with up to 50 seconds of processing.** A longer request uses one more unit per started 50-second block (for example, 51 seconds of processing uses 2 units, $0.158).
- More outputs or steps take longer, but one unit covers the whole request as long as processing stays within 50 seconds.
- **Example cost**: the example took 3.88 seconds of processing, which is 1 unit, $0.079.
- **Failed or cancelled predictions are not billed.**
- **GET requests to check prediction status** are free and don't count toward API unit usage.
- **No monthly subscription fee.**

## API Documentation

### Base URL
All API requests go to: `https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/aesthetic-image-generator-playgroundai-playground-v2-5-1024px-aesthetic`

### Authentication
Send your api.market API key in the `x-api-market-key` header:
```
x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY
```

### Asynchronous Processing
**IMPORTANT**: This API is asynchronous. The flow is:
1. Send a POST request to `/predictions`. A successful request returns **201 Created** with a prediction `id` and a `status` of `starting` or `processing`.
2. Poll GET `/predictions/{id}` with that ID.
3. Keep polling while `status` is `starting` or `processing`.
4. Stop when `status` is `succeeded` (read `output`), `failed` or `canceled` (read `error`).

A polling interval of 1 second and an overall timeout of 600 seconds (10 minutes) work well.

### Endpoints

#### Create a Prediction
```bash
curl -X POST "https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/aesthetic-image-generator-playgroundai-playground-v2-5-1024px-aesthetic/predictions" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "version": "a45f82a1382bed5c7aeb861dac7c7d191b0fdf74d8d57c4a0e6ed7d4d0bf7d24",
    "input": {
      "width": 1024,
      "height": 1024,
      "prompt": "Astronaut in a jungle, cold color palette, muted colors, detailed, 8k",
      "scheduler": "DPMSolver++",
      "num_outputs": 1,
      "guidance_scale": 3,
      "apply_watermark": true,
      "negative_prompt": "ugly, deformed, noisy, blurry, distorted",
      "prompt_strength": 0.8,
      "num_inference_steps": 25
    }
  }'
```

Response (201 Created):
```json
{
  "id": "bdp6neycynrne0d1ccvvr46dbc",
  "version": "a45f82a1382bed5c7aeb861dac7c7d191b0fdf74d8d57c4a0e6ed7d4d0bf7d24",
  "status": "starting",
  "created_at": "2026-10-22T10:46:03.993Z"
}
```

#### Check Prediction Status
```bash
curl -X GET "https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/aesthetic-image-generator-playgroundai-playground-v2-5-1024px-aesthetic/predictions/{id}" \
  -H "x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY"
```

Response when the prediction has finished (200 OK):
```json
{
  "id": "bdp6neycynrne0d1ccvvr46dbc",
  "status": "succeeded",
  "output": [
    "https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/playground-v2-5-1024px-aesthetic-output-bdp6neyc-api-market.jpg"
  ],
  "error": null,
  "created_at": "2026-10-22T10:46:03.993Z",
  "started_at": "2026-10-22T10:46:32.018Z",
  "completed_at": "2026-10-22T10:46:36.901Z"
}
```

`output` is a list of image URLs, one per image requested with `num_outputs`.

### Status Codes
- **201 Created**: prediction created (POST `/predictions`). This is the normal success response.
- **200 OK**: prediction details returned (GET `/predictions/{id}`).
- **400 Bad Request**: invalid input, for example a `width` above 1536 or a `num_outputs` above 4.
- **401 Unauthorized**: missing or invalid API key.
- **404 Not Found**: no prediction with that ID.
- **429 Too Many Requests**: rate limit exceeded.
- **500 Internal Server Error** or **503 Service Unavailable**: temporary server problem; retry later.

## Rate Limits
All plans allow 10 requests per second. Requests above that return `429 Too Many Requests`; back off before retrying and honour any `Retry-After` header. Polling a prediction with GET is free but still counts toward the per-second limit, so poll every 1 to 5 seconds rather than in a tight loop.

## Error Handling
- Check the HTTP status code of every request and read the response body for the error message.
- A prediction can also end with `status` set to `failed`; the `error` field then explains why. Failed predictions are not billed.
- Retry 429, 500 and 503 responses with exponential backoff. Fix the input before retrying a 400.

## FAQ
- **Is `prompt` required?**
  - No. If you leave it out, the default prompt `Astronaut in a jungle, cold color palette, muted colors, detailed, 8k` is used, so always send your own.
- **How do I inpaint part of an image?**
  - Send the `image`, a `mask` (white where the image should change, black where it should stay) and a `prompt` describing the new content. `prompt_strength` controls how strongly the masked area changes.
- **How do I turn off the watermark?**
  - Set `apply_watermark` to `false`.
- **How many images can I get from one request?**
  - Up to 4, set with `num_outputs`. The request is billed by processing time, not per image.
- **Is the 201 response from POST an error?**
  - No. 201 Created means the prediction was accepted. Use the returned `id` to poll GET `/predictions/{id}` until `status` is `succeeded`, `failed` or `canceled`.
