# 🗜️ Image Compression and Conversion API (littletry Compress Image)

## Overview
Compress Image compresses, resizes and converts JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF images.

Send an image URL and pick an output format and a compression mode. Each request returns the URL of one compressed image.

## Features
- **Formats**: output as `webp` (default), `jpeg`, `png`, `avif`, or `same` to keep the input format.
- **Three compression modes**: `quality` (uses `quality`, 1 to 100), `target_size` (aims for `target_size_kb`) and `lossless`.
- **Resizing**: `max_width` and `max_height` limit the size; images are never enlarged.
- **Metadata control**: `strip_exif` removes camera metadata including possible GPS data; `preserve_icc_profile` keeps the color profile.
- **Transparency**: `background_color` fills transparent areas for JPEG output.
- **Input limits**: static images up to 50 MB and 40 MP.

## Use Cases
1. **Website images**: convert uploads to WebP or AVIF to cut page weight.
2. **Upload size limits**: hit a file size with `target_size` mode and `target_size_kb`.
3. **Privacy**: strip EXIF data, including GPS location, before publishing user photos.
4. **Thumbnails**: cap the size with `max_width` and `max_height`.

## Visual Examples
### Example Input
The example converts a JPEG photo to WebP at quality 82 with EXIF data removed.

| `background_color` | string | No | `#ffffff` |  | Opaque CSS color placed behind transparent areas for JPEG output. |
| `only_if_smaller` | boolean | No | `true` | | Only use the compressed result when it is smaller than the input. |

## Pricing
- **Pay As You Go (PAYG) pricing**: you only pay for what you use.
- **Price**: $0.0064 per API unit.
- **1 API unit = 1 successful request** that uses up to 57 seconds of processing time. A request that needs more processing time is billed one more unit for each started block of 57 seconds (for example, 58 to 114 seconds of processing is 2 units, $0.0128).
- **Example cost**: the example request on this page used 1.6 seconds of processing, so it was billed 1 unit ($0.0064).
- **Failed or cancelled predictions are not billed.**
- **GET requests to check prediction status** are free and don't count toward API unit usage.
- **No monthly subscription fee.**

## API Documentation

### Base URL
All API requests go to: `https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/compress-resize-convert-images-littletry-compress-image`

### Authentication
Send your api.market API key in the `x-api-market-key` header:
```
x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY
```

### Asynchronous Processing
**IMPORTANT**: This API is asynchronous. The flow is:
1. Send a POST request to `/predictions`. A successful request returns **201 Created** with a prediction `id` and a `status` of `starting` or `processing`.
2. Poll GET `/predictions/{id}` with that ID.
3. Keep polling while `status` is `starting` or `processing`.
4. Stop when `status` is `succeeded` (read `output`), `failed` or `canceled` (read `error`).

A polling interval of 1 second and an overall timeout of 600 seconds (10 minutes) work well.

### Endpoints

#### Create a Prediction
```bash
curl -X POST "https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/compress-resize-convert-images-littletry-compress-image/predictions" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "version": "b64c64a922999933a6e4389a91930ac6e42e95dc0eda8e4678a6a9621ffc36c4",
    "input": {
      "image": "https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/compress-image-input-api-market.jpg",
      "quality": 82,
      "strip_exif": true,
      "output_format": "webp",
      "only_if_smaller": true,
      "background_color": "#ffffff",
      "compression_mode": "quality",
      "preserve_icc_profile": true,
      "allow_resize_for_target": true
    }
  }'
```

Response (201 Created):
```json
{
  "id": "27rg7a2zthrmr0d1d11tgptrtc",
  "version": "b64c64a922999933a6e4389a91930ac6e42e95dc0eda8e4678a6a9621ffc36c4",
  "status": "starting",
  "created_at": "2026-10-23T10:16:48.495Z"
}
```

#### Check Prediction Status
```bash
curl -X GET "https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/compress-resize-convert-images-littletry-compress-image/predictions/{id}" \
  -H "x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY"
```

Response when the prediction has finished (200 OK):
```json
{
  "id": "27rg7a2zthrmr0d1d11tgptrtc",
  "status": "succeeded",
  "output": "https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/compress-image-output-27rg7a2z-api-market.webp",
  "error": null,
  "created_at": "2026-10-23T10:16:48.495Z",
  "started_at": "2026-10-23T10:16:48.509Z",
  "completed_at": "2026-10-23T10:16:50.102Z"
}
```

`output` is a single URL string pointing to the compressed image.

### Status Codes
- **201 Created**: prediction created (POST `/predictions`). This is the normal success response.
- **200 OK**: prediction details returned (GET `/predictions/{id}`).
- **400 Bad Request**: invalid input, for example a missing `image`, a `quality` outside 1 to 100, or an `output_format` that is not in the list.
- **401 Unauthorized**: missing or invalid API key.
- **404 Not Found**: no prediction with that ID.
- **429 Too Many Requests**: rate limit exceeded.
- **500 Internal Server Error** or **503 Service Unavailable**: temporary server problem; retry later.

## Rate Limits
All plans allow 10 requests per second. Requests above that return `429 Too Many Requests`; back off before retrying and honour any `Retry-After` header. Polling a prediction with GET is free but still counts toward the per-second limit, so poll every 1 to 5 seconds rather than in a tight loop.

## Error Handling
- Check the HTTP status code of every request and read the response body for the error message.
- A prediction can also end with `status` set to `failed`; the `error` field then explains why. Failed predictions are not billed.
- Retry 429, 500 and 503 responses with exponential backoff. Fix the input before retrying a 400.

## FAQ
- **How do I get a file under a specific size?**
  - Set `compression_mode` to `target_size` and `target_size_kb` to the size you need. Keep `allow_resize_for_target` on to allow resizing when needed.
- **Will my image be enlarged?**
  - No. `max_width` and `max_height` only shrink images.
- **Which input formats are supported?**
  - Static JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF images up to 50 MB and 40 MP.
- **Is the 201 response from POST an error?**
  - No. 201 Created means the prediction was accepted. Use the returned `id` to poll GET `/predictions/{id}` until `status` is `succeeded`, `failed` or `canceled`.
- **What if my prediction fails?**
  - Failed predictions are not billed. Read the `error` field, adjust the input and try again.
