# 🧑 Face-Guided SDXL Image Generator API (lucataco IP-Adapter SDXL Face)

## Overview
This API generates SDXL images guided by a face photo. Its developer describes the image prompt adapter as a way to let a pretrained text-to-image diffusion model generate SDXL images with an image prompt; this version takes a face image as that image prompt.

Send a face `image` and, optionally, a text `prompt` that describes the scene. `scale` sets how strongly the input image influences the result. Leave `prompt` blank to get variations of the input image. The API returns a list of 1 to 4 image URLs.

## Features
- **Face image prompt**: `image` is the face photo that guides the generation.
- **Text prompt**: describe the scene, clothing or setting in `prompt`; leave it blank for image variations.
- **Negative prompt**: list what to avoid in `negative_prompt`.
- **Image influence**: `scale` from 0 to 1 (default 0.6) sets how much the input image shapes the output.
- **Several images per request**: `num_outputs` from 1 to 4 (default 1).
- **Quality and reproducibility controls**: `num_inference_steps` from 1 to 500 (default 30) and an optional `seed`.

## Use Cases
1. **Portraits in new settings**: place the face from a photo into a scene described by the prompt, as in the example below.
2. **Character concepts**: keep one face consistent while trying different outfits and backgrounds.
3. **Image variations**: leave `prompt` blank to get new images based on the input face.
4. **Avatar drafts**: produce several candidate images in one request with `num_outputs`.

## Visual Examples
### Example Input
![Example input: the face image sent as the image prompt](https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/ip_adapter-sdxl-face-input-api-market.png)

Prompt: "photo of a beautiful girl wearing casual shirt in a garden"

Settings: `scale` 0.6, `num_outputs` 1, `num_inference_steps` 30, `seed` 42, `negative_prompt` empty.

### Example Output

| `negative_prompt` | string | No | `""` |  | Negative prompt |
| `scale` | number | No | `0.6` | 0 to 1 | Scale (influence of input image on generation) |
| `num_outputs` | integer | No | `1` | 1 to 4 | Number of images to output |
| `num_inference_steps` | integer | No | `30` | 1 to 500 | Number of denoising steps |
| `seed` | integer | No | none |  | Random seed. Leave blank to randomize the seed |

## Pricing
- **Pay As You Go (PAYG) pricing**: you only pay for what you use.
- **Price**: $0.029 per API unit.
- **1 API unit = 1 successful request with up to 26 seconds of processing.** A request that runs longer is billed one more unit for each started 26-second block (for example, 30 seconds of processing is 2 units, $0.058). More images (`num_outputs`) and more `num_inference_steps` take longer and can use more units.
- The example request above (one image, 30 steps) took 11.4 seconds of processing, which is 1 unit, so it cost $0.029.
- **Failed or cancelled predictions are not billed.**
- **GET requests to check prediction status** are free and don't count toward API unit usage.
- **No monthly subscription fee.**

## API Documentation

### Base URL
All API requests go to: `https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/image-prompt-to-sdxl-generator-lucataco-ip-adapter-sdxl-face`

### Authentication
Send your api.market API key in the `x-api-market-key` header:
```
x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY
```

### Asynchronous Processing
**IMPORTANT**: This API is asynchronous. The flow is:
1. Send a POST request to `/predictions`. A successful request returns **201 Created** with a prediction `id` and a `status` of `starting` or `processing`.
2. Poll GET `/predictions/{id}` with that ID.
3. Keep polling while `status` is `starting` or `processing`.
4. Stop when `status` is `succeeded` (read `output`), `failed` or `canceled` (read `error`).

A polling interval of 1 second and an overall timeout of 600 seconds (10 minutes) work well.

### Endpoints

#### Create a Prediction
```bash
curl -X POST "https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/image-prompt-to-sdxl-generator-lucataco-ip-adapter-sdxl-face/predictions" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "version": "226c6bf67a75a129b0f978e518fed33e1fb13956e15761c1ac53c9d2f898c9af",
    "input": {
      "seed": 42,
      "image": "https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/ip_adapter-sdxl-face-input-api-market.png",
      "scale": 0.6,
      "prompt": "photo of a beautiful girl wearing casual shirt in a garden",
      "num_outputs": 1,
      "negative_prompt": "",
      "num_inference_steps": 30
    }
  }'
```

Response (201 Created):
```json
{
  "id": "0v89zeeh8hrmr0d1d9qvypcmz4",
  "version": "226c6bf67a75a129b0f978e518fed33e1fb13956e15761c1ac53c9d2f898c9af",
  "status": "starting",
  "created_at": "2026-10-23T18:11:45.677Z"
}
```

#### Check Prediction Status
```bash
curl -X GET "https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/image-prompt-to-sdxl-generator-lucataco-ip-adapter-sdxl-face/predictions/{id}" \
  -H "x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY"
```

Response when the prediction has finished (200 OK):
```json
{
  "id": "0v89zeeh8hrmr0d1d9qvypcmz4",
  "status": "succeeded",
  "output": [
    "https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/ip_adapter-sdxl-face-output-0v89zeeh-api-market.jpg"
  ],
  "error": null,
  "created_at": "2026-10-23T18:11:45.677Z",
  "started_at": "2026-10-23T18:11:46.677Z",
  "completed_at": "2026-10-23T18:11:58.087Z"
}
```

`output` is a list of image URLs, one per generated image (`num_outputs`).

### Status Codes
- **201 Created**: prediction created (POST `/predictions`). This is the normal success response.
- **200 OK**: prediction details returned (GET `/predictions/{id}`).
- **400 Bad Request**: invalid input, for example a missing `image`, a `scale` outside 0 to 1 or a `num_outputs` outside 1 to 4.
- **401 Unauthorized**: missing or invalid API key.
- **404 Not Found**: no prediction with that ID.
- **429 Too Many Requests**: rate limit exceeded.
- **500 Internal Server Error** or **503 Service Unavailable**: temporary server problem; retry later.

## Rate Limits
All plans allow 10 requests per second. Requests above that return `429 Too Many Requests`; back off before retrying and honour any `Retry-After` header. Polling a prediction with GET is free but still counts toward the per-second limit, so poll every 1 to 5 seconds rather than in a tight loop.

## Error Handling
- Check the HTTP status code of every request and read the response body for the error message.
- A prediction can also end with `status` set to `failed`; the `error` field then explains why. Failed predictions are not billed.
- Retry 429, 500 and 503 responses with exponential backoff. Fix the input before retrying a 400.

## FAQ
- **What should the input image be?**
  - A face photo. The model uses it as the image prompt that guides the generated images.
- **What does `scale` do?**
  - It sets the influence of the input image on the generation, from 0 to 1 (default 0.6). Higher values follow the input image more closely; lower values give the text `prompt` more room.
- **Can I run it without a text prompt?**
  - Yes. `prompt` is optional; leave it blank to get variations of the input image.
- **How many images does one request return?**
  - `num_outputs` images, from 1 to 4 (default 1). `output` is always a list of URLs.
- **How is a request billed?**
  - By processing time: $0.029 covers up to 26 seconds, and each further started 26-second block adds one unit. The example (one image, 30 steps) took 11.4 seconds and cost one unit.
- **What if my prediction fails?**
  - Failed predictions are not billed. Read the `error` field, check that the image URL is reachable and try again.
