# ✏️ PNG to SVG Vectorizer API (merahburam Vectorizer v2)

## Overview
Vectorizer v2, published by merahburam, converts a raster image (PNG or JPG) into an SVG vector file. Its developer describes it as PNG to SVG vectorization built on VTracer.

Send an `image` URL and the API returns the URL of one SVG file. You can pick one of eight vectorization methods (`vtracer` is the default), limit the number of colors, drop small shapes and control how much the paths are simplified.

## Features
- **Raster to vector**: send a PNG or JPG and get an SVG file back.
- **Eight methods**: `potrace`, `python_color`, `smart_trace`, `ai_perfect`, `ai_optimized`, `character`, `vtracer` (default) and `vtracer_fast`.
- **Color limit**: `color_count` sets the maximum number of colors, from 2 to 16 (default 8).
- **Noise control**: `min_area` drops shapes smaller than 10 to 1000 pixels (default 50).
- **Path simplification**: `simplify_tolerance` from 0.5 to 10 (default 2).
- **SVG optimization**: `optimize_svg` (default `true`) removes white backgrounds and simplifies paths.
- **Potrace threshold**: `threshold` (0 to 1) sets the black and white cutoff when `vectorizer` is `potrace`.

## Use Cases
1. **Logos and icons**: turn a PNG logo or icon into an SVG that scales to any size.
2. **Print and cutting files**: prepare vector artwork for printing, vinyl cutting or embroidery software that needs paths.
3. **Web graphics**: replace raster illustrations with SVGs for sharp rendering on every screen.
4. **Design tools**: add a convert-to-vector button to an editor or asset pipeline.

## Visual Examples
### Example Input
A small color graphic (a palm-tree illustration) vectorized with the default `vtracer` method, up to 8 colors, shapes under 50 pixels removed and SVG optimization on.

![Example input: a palm-tree graphic in PNG format](https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/fast-image-resizer-input-api-market.png)

```json
{
  "image": "https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/fast-image-resizer-input-api-market.png",
  "min_area": 50,
  "threshold": 0.5,
  "vectorizer": "vtracer",
  "color_count": 8,
  "optimize_svg": true,
  "simplify_tolerance": 2
}
```

### Example Output
The API returned an SVG file. The image below is a PNG rendering of that SVG.

## Input Parameters
| Field | Type | Required | Default | Allowed values | Description |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `image` | string (URL) | Yes | | | Input image (URL) to vectorize into SVG: PNG or JPG. |
| `vectorizer` | string | No | `vtracer` | `potrace`, `python_color`, `smart_trace`, `ai_perfect`, `ai_optimized`, `character`, `vtracer`, `vtracer_fast` | Vectorization method. |
| `color_count` | integer | No | `8` | 2 to 16 | Maximum number of colors to extract. |
| `threshold` | number | No | `0.5` | 0 to 1 | Threshold for the black and white bitmap conversion. Only used by `potrace`. |
| `min_area` | integer | No | `50` | 10 to 1000 | Minimum area of a shape, in pixels. Smaller shapes are dropped. |
| `simplify_tolerance` | number | No | `2` | 0.5 to 10 | Path simplification tolerance. Higher values give simpler paths. |
| `optimize_svg` | boolean | No | `true` |  | Optimize the SVG output (remove white backgrounds, simplify paths). |

## Pricing
- **Pay As You Go (PAYG) pricing**: you only pay for what you use.
- **Price**: $0.001 per API unit.
- **1 API unit = 1 request with up to 8 seconds of processing.** A request that runs longer is billed one more unit for each started 8-second block (for example, more than 8 and up to 16 seconds of processing is 2 units, $0.002).
- Larger images and higher `color_count` values take longer to trace and can add units.
- **Example cost**: the example request took 0.4 seconds of processing, which fits in one 8-second block: 1 API unit, $0.001.
- **Failed or cancelled predictions are not billed.**
- **GET requests to check prediction status** are free and don't count toward API unit usage.
- **No monthly subscription fee.**

## API Documentation

### Base URL
All API requests go to: `https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/png-to-svg-vectorizer-merahburam-vectorizer-v2`

### Authentication
Send your api.market API key in the `x-api-market-key` header:
```
x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY
```

### Asynchronous Processing
**IMPORTANT**: This API is asynchronous. The flow is:
1. Send a POST request to `/predictions`. A successful request returns **201 Created** with a prediction `id` and a `status` of `starting` or `processing`.
2. Poll GET `/predictions/{id}` with that ID.
3. Keep polling while `status` is `starting` or `processing`.
4. Stop when `status` is `succeeded` (read `output`), `failed` or `canceled` (read `error`).

A polling interval of 1 second and an overall timeout of 600 seconds (10 minutes) work well.

### Endpoints

#### Create a Prediction
```bash
curl -X POST "https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/png-to-svg-vectorizer-merahburam-vectorizer-v2/predictions" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "version": "710ceb70bc468d7ee6f252a16a7d9b60e9fbe24786965dbc2e808c2de38a5a32",
    "input": {
      "image": "https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/fast-image-resizer-input-api-market.png",
      "min_area": 50,
      "threshold": 0.5,
      "vectorizer": "vtracer",
      "color_count": 8,
      "optimize_svg": true,
      "simplify_tolerance": 2
    }
  }'
```

Response (201 Created):
```json
{
  "id": "ea3jmfbbtsrmr0d1f1n91g2890",
  "version": "710ceb70bc468d7ee6f252a16a7d9b60e9fbe24786965dbc2e808c2de38a5a32",
  "status": "starting",
  "created_at": "2026-10-26T13:33:22.933Z"
}
```

#### Check Prediction Status
```bash
curl -X GET "https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/png-to-svg-vectorizer-merahburam-vectorizer-v2/predictions/{id}" \
  -H "x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY"
```

Response when the prediction has finished (200 OK):
```json
{
  "id": "ea3jmfbbtsrmr0d1f1n91g2890",
  "status": "succeeded",
  "output": "https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/vectorizer-v2-output-ea3jmfbb-api-market.png",
  "error": null,
  "created_at": "2026-10-26T13:33:22.933Z",
  "started_at": "2026-10-26T13:33:30.436Z",
  "completed_at": "2026-10-26T13:33:30.819Z"
}
```

`output` is a single URL string pointing to the generated SVG file. (The URL above is a PNG rendering of the example's SVG, so it can be shown on this page.)

### Status Codes
- **201 Created**: prediction created (POST `/predictions`). This is the normal success response.
- **200 OK**: prediction details returned (GET `/predictions/{id}`).
- **400 Bad Request**: invalid input, for example a missing `image`, a `color_count` above 16 or a `vectorizer` that is not in the list.
- **401 Unauthorized**: missing or invalid API key.
- **404 Not Found**: no prediction with that ID.
- **429 Too Many Requests**: rate limit exceeded.
- **500 Internal Server Error** or **503 Service Unavailable**: temporary server problem; retry later.

## Rate Limits
Requests are rate limited to keep usage fair. If you receive a 429 response, wait and retry with exponential backoff.

## Error Handling
- Check the HTTP status code of every request and read the response body for the error message.
- A prediction can also end with `status` set to `failed`; the `error` field then explains why. Failed predictions are not billed.
- Retry 429, 500 and 503 responses with exponential backoff. Fix the input before retrying a 400.

## FAQ
- **What file does the API return?**
  - One SVG file. `output` is its URL; download it and use it like any other SVG.
- **Which method should I use?**
  - Start with the default `vtracer`. `vtracer_fast` is a faster variant, and `potrace` traces in black and white using `threshold`. The other methods (`python_color`, `smart_trace`, `ai_perfect`, `ai_optimized`, `character`) are alternatives worth comparing on your own images.
- **How do I get fewer, cleaner shapes?**
  - Lower `color_count`, raise `min_area` to drop small specks and raise `simplify_tolerance` for smoother, simpler paths.
- **How much does a request cost?**
  - $0.001 for each started 8 seconds of processing. The example image took 0.4 seconds and cost 1 unit ($0.001); larger or more detailed images can take longer.
- **What if my prediction fails?**
  - Failed predictions are not billed. Read the `error` field, adjust the input and try again.
