# 🎬 Video Background Removal API (Bria Video Remove Background)

## Overview
Bria Video Remove Background removes the background from a video. Its developer describes it as a way to create clean, professional content without a green screen.

Send the URL of a video in `video_url`. Choose a transparent background or one of 13 solid colors with `background_color`, the output container and codec with `output_container_and_codec`, and whether to keep the original audio with `preserve_audio`. Each request returns the URL of one processed video.

## Features
- **Transparent backgrounds**: `background_color` `Transparent` (default) keeps only the foreground. Transparency needs a format that supports it: `webm_vp9` (default), `mov_proresks` or `gif`.
- **Solid colors**: replace the background with `Black`, `White`, `Gray`, `Red`, `Green`, `Blue`, `Yellow`, `Cyan`, `Magenta`, `Brown`, `Orange`, `Purple` or `Pink`.
- **Output formats**: `mp4_h264`, `mp4_h265`, `webm_vp9`, `mov_h265`, `mov_proresks`, `mkv_h264`, `mkv_h265`, `mkv_vp9` or `gif`.
- **Audio**: `preserve_audio` (default `true`) keeps the original soundtrack in the output.

## Use Cases
1. **Overlays for video editing**: cut out a presenter or product and place it over other footage, using a transparent `webm_vp9` or `mov_proresks` file.
2. **Clean backgrounds**: put talking-head or product clips on a plain white or black background.
3. **Social and marketing clips**: reuse footage shot without a green screen.
4. **Animated cut-outs**: export short clips as transparent `gif` files for web pages.

## Visual Examples
### Example Input
The example sends a short video in `video_url` with `background_color` `Transparent`, `output_container_and_codec` `webm_vp9` and `preserve_audio` `true`.

[Watch the example input](https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/video-remove-background-input-api-market.mp4)

### Example Output
The model returned a 5.6-second video with the background removed.

[Watch the example output](https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/video-remove-background-output-d5310apn-api-market.mp4)

The request asked for a transparent `webm_vp9` file; the linked copy is an MP4 preview, and MP4 previews do not keep transparency.

## Input Parameters
| Field | Type | Required | Default | Allowed values | Description |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `video_url` | string (URL) | Yes |  |  | URL of the video file to process |
| `background_color` | string | No | `Transparent` | `Transparent`, `Black`, `White`, `Gray`, `Red`, `Green`, `Blue`, `Yellow`, `Cyan`, `Magenta`, `Brown`, `Orange`, `Purple`, `Pink` | Background color to apply. Use `Transparent` for a transparent background. |
| `output_container_and_codec` | string | No | `webm_vp9` | `mp4_h264`, `mp4_h265`, `webm_vp9`, `mov_h265`, `mov_proresks`, `mkv_h264`, `mkv_h265`, `mkv_vp9`, `gif` | Output container and codec. For transparency use `webm_vp9`, `mov_proresks` or `gif`. |
| `preserve_audio` | boolean | No | `true` |  | Keep the original audio in the output |

## Pricing
- **Pay As You Go (PAYG) pricing**: you only pay for what you use.
- **Price**: $0.063 per API unit.
- **1 API unit = 1 second of output video**, rounded up per request. The output is as long as your input video, so a 10-second clip costs 10 units ($0.63) and a 60-second clip 60 units ($3.78).
- Background color, output format and audio settings do not change the price.
- **Example cost**: the example output was 5.6 seconds long, rounded up to 6 API units = **$0.378**.
- **Failed or cancelled predictions are not billed.**
- **GET requests to check prediction status** are free and don't count toward API unit usage.
- **No monthly subscription fee.**

## API Documentation

### Base URL
All API requests go to: `https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/video-background-removal-bria-video-remove-background`

### Authentication
Send your api.market API key in the `x-api-market-key` header:
```
x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY
```

### Asynchronous Processing
**IMPORTANT**: This API is asynchronous. The flow is:
1. Send a POST request to `/predictions`. A successful request returns **201 Created** with a prediction `id` and a `status` of `starting` or `processing`.
2. Poll GET `/predictions/{id}` with that ID.
3. Keep polling while `status` is `starting` or `processing`.
4. Stop when `status` is `succeeded` (read `output`), `failed` or `canceled` (read `error`).

A polling interval of 1 second and an overall timeout of 600 seconds (10 minutes) work well.

### Endpoints

#### Create a Prediction
```bash
curl -X POST "https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/video-background-removal-bria-video-remove-background/predictions" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY" \
  -d '{
      "version": "bria/video-remove-background",
      "input": {
        "video_url": "https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/video-remove-background-input-api-market.mp4",
        "preserve_audio": true,
        "background_color": "Transparent",
        "output_container_and_codec": "webm_vp9"
      }
    }'
```

Response (201 Created):
```json
{
  "id": "d5310apnh1rmt0d1c6q8hzjk9g",
  "version": "bria/video-remove-background",
  "status": "starting",
  "created_at": "2026-10-22T03:36:50.514Z"
}
```

#### Check Prediction Status
```bash
curl -X GET "https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/video-background-removal-bria-video-remove-background/predictions/{id}" \
  -H "x-api-market-key: YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY"
```

Response when the prediction has finished (200 OK):
```json
{
  "id": "d5310apnh1rmt0d1c6q8hzjk9g",
  "status": "succeeded",
  "output": "https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/video-remove-background-output-d5310apn-api-market.mp4",
  "error": null,
  "created_at": "2026-10-22T03:36:50.514Z",
  "started_at": "2026-10-22T03:36:50.564Z",
  "completed_at": "2026-10-22T03:37:09.601Z"
}
```

`output` is a single URL string pointing to the processed video, in the container and codec set by `output_container_and_codec`.

### Status Codes
- **201 Created**: prediction created (POST `/predictions`). This is the normal success response.
- **200 OK**: prediction details returned (GET `/predictions/{id}`).
- **400 Bad Request**: invalid input, for example a missing `video_url`, or a `background_color` or `output_container_and_codec` that is not in the list.
- **401 Unauthorized**: missing or invalid API key.
- **404 Not Found**: no prediction with that ID.
- **429 Too Many Requests**: rate limit exceeded.
- **500 Internal Server Error** or **503 Service Unavailable**: temporary server problem; retry later.

## Rate Limits
All plans allow 10 requests per second. Requests above that return `429 Too Many Requests`; back off before retrying and honour any `Retry-After` header. Polling a prediction with GET is free but still counts toward the per-second limit, so poll every 1 to 5 seconds rather than in a tight loop.
## Error Handling
- Check the HTTP status code of every request and read the response body for the error message.
- A prediction can also end with `status` set to `failed`; the `error` field then explains why. Failed predictions are not billed.
- Retry 429, 500 and 503 responses with exponential backoff. Fix the input before retrying a 400.

## Implementation Guide
### Example Code

#### JavaScript
```javascript
const apiKey = "YOUR_API_MARKET_KEY";
const baseUrl = "https://prod.api.market/api/v1/magicapi/video-background-removal-bria-video-remove-background";
async function createAndWaitForPrediction(input) {
  const response = await fetch(`${baseUrl}/predictions`, {
    method: "POST",
    headers: {
      "Content-Type": "application/json",
      "x-api-market-key": apiKey
    },
    body: JSON.stringify({ version: "bria/video-remove-background", input })
  });
  if (response.status !== 201) {
    throw new Error(`API error: ${response.status} ${await response.text()}`);
  }
  const prediction = await response.json();
  return pollForResults(prediction.id);
}
const delay = (ms) => new Promise((resolve) => setTimeout(resolve, ms));
async function pollForResults(predictionId) {
  const maxTimeout = 600000;
  const pollInterval = 1000;
  const startTime = Date.now();
  while (Date.now() - startTime < maxTimeout) {
    const response = await fetch(`${baseUrl}/predictions/${predictionId}`, {
      headers: { "x-api-market-key": apiKey }
    });
    if (!response.ok) {
      throw new Error(`API error: ${response.status} ${await response.text()}`);
    }
    const prediction = await response.json();
    if (prediction.status === "succeeded") {
      return prediction.output;
    }
    if (prediction.status === "failed" || prediction.status === "canceled") {
      throw new Error(`Prediction ${prediction.status}: ${prediction.error || "Unknown error"}`);
    }
    await delay(pollInterval);
  }
  throw new Error("Prediction timed out after 10 minutes");
}
createAndWaitForPrediction({
    "video_url": "https://blog.api.market/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/video-remove-background-input-api-market.mp4",
    "preserve_audio": true,
    "background_color": "Transparent",
    "output_container_and_codec": "webm_vp9"
  }).then((output) => console.log(output));
```

## FAQ
- **Which formats keep the transparent background?**
  - `webm_vp9` (the default), `mov_proresks` and `gif`. With any other format, choose a solid `background_color`.
- **Can I replace the background with a color instead?**
  - Yes. Set `background_color` to one of `Black`, `White`, `Gray`, `Red`, `Green`, `Blue`, `Yellow`, `Cyan`, `Magenta`, `Brown`, `Orange`, `Purple` or `Pink`.
- **Is the audio kept?**
  - Yes, by default. Set `preserve_audio` to `false` to get a silent video.
- **How much does a video cost?**
  - $0.063 per second of output, rounded up per request. The output has the length of your input, so a 30-second clip costs $1.89. The 5.6-second example cost $0.378.
- **What if my prediction fails?**
  - Failed predictions are not billed. Read the `error` field, check that `video_url` is a reachable video file and try again.
- **Is the 201 response from POST an error?**
  - No. 201 Created means the prediction was accepted. Use the returned `id` to poll GET `/predictions/{id}` until `status` is `succeeded`, `failed` or `canceled`.
