# SiftingIO Market Data API

## Overview

A unified REST API for US equities, forex, cryptocurrency, commodities, and DEX market data. Real-time last trade and quote data, historical OHLCV bars, and company fundamentals (SEC filings, financial statements, insider transactions, institutional holdings) are all available through one consistent structure instead of separate integrations per asset class.

Historical data extends back more than 25 years for supported instruments.

### Authentication

Every request must include your API.market key in the `x-api-market-key` header.

Several endpoints (marked below) require an `Accept-Encoding: gzip` header, since their responses are large. Send it on every request to avoid errors on those endpoints.

### Understanding the `{venue}` parameter

Several endpoints take a `{venue}` path segment. Despite the name, this is **not** an exchange or trading venue, it is the asset class you are querying. The accepted values are:

Any other value, including real exchange codes like `XNAS` or venue names like `nyse`, returns a `404 unknown venue` error. This applies to `/v1/last/trade`, `/v1/last/quote`, `/v1/last/close`, and `/v1/snapshot/{venue}`.

DEX endpoints use a separate `{chain}` parameter instead, accepted values include `eth`, `base`, and `bsc` (lowercase short codes, not full chain names).

### Endpoints

This product exposes 35 endpoints. The most commonly used are documented in full below, the remaining fundamentals and reference endpoints are listed in the table that follows.

#### `GET /v1/last/trade/{venue}/{symbol}`

Latest trade for a symbol. See the venue table above for valid `{venue}` values.

#### `GET /v1/hist/stocks/{ticker}/bars`

Historical OHLCV bars. Equivalent endpoints exist for forex, commodities, crypto, and DEX under `/v1/hist/{forex,commodities,crypto,dex}/{symbol}/bars`. Gzip required.

## Status Codes

| Code | Meaning |

| `200` | Request succeeded. |
| `400` | The symbol is not valid for the given venue or chain. |
| `401` | The API key is missing or not valid. |
| `404` | The venue, chain, or symbol was not recognised, see `error` in the response body for which. |
| `429` | You have exceeded the request rate or the quota included in your plan. |

## Rate Limits

Rate limits and monthly quotas are set by your API.market plan. Endpoints marked gzip required in this document return large payloads (full financials, screener results, historical bars, and market snapshots) and expect `Accept-Encoding: gzip` on the request.

## Error Handling

Errors are returned as `{"error": "..."}`. Two distinct messages appear for invalid symbols depending on where the problem is: `"unknown venue"` means the `{venue}` or `{chain}` value itself is not recognised, check it against the tables above. `"invalid symbol for venue"` or `"symbol not found"` means the venue or chain was valid but the symbol was not, check spelling and confirm the symbol is covered for that asset class via `/v1/fnd/stocks/search` or `/v1/fnd/markets`.

## FAQ

**What does the `{venue}` parameter actually mean?**

It is the asset class, not an exchange. Valid values are `stocks`, `forex`, `crypto`, and `commodities`. See Understanding the `{venue}` parameter above.

**Does this API support WebSocket streaming?**

No. This listing provides REST access only. All endpoints are request/response over HTTP.

**Is market news available?**

No, this listing does not currently include a news endpoint.

**Why do I need `Accept-Encoding: gzip` on some requests?**

Endpoints returning large payloads, full financials, screener output, historical bars, and market snapshots, expect this header. It is already set for you automatically when calling through API.market.

**How far back does historical data go?**

More than 25 years for supported instruments, depth varies by symbol and asset class.

**What chain codes does the DEX data use?**

Short lowercase codes such as `eth`, `base`, and `bsc`, not full chain names.
